Larissa Martinez, a Texas student graduating with valedictorian honors from McKinney Boyd High School, made sure to give a speech that would not be forgotten easily. In her speech she proclaimed that she was an undocumented immigrant. She stated,
I am one of the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the shadows of the United States.
Larissa wanted to show her classmates that undocumented immigrants are just like everybody else. She emphasized,
I decided to stand before you today and reveal these unexpected realities, because this might be my only chance to convey the truth to all of you that undocumented immigrants are people, too.
Larissa is now attending Yale University, but she still has not become a US Citizen despite submitting an application over 8 years ago. She expressed her desire for change, but she acknowledged it may be tough given the current United States political climate.
